A dry-looking patch in August can tempt you to add time to every irrigation zone. First, watch how water reaches that exact area. If most of the lawn already receives enough, a longer cycle may leave you with the same patch and wetter grass everywhere else.
Start with the pattern
Note where the patch sits relative to the sprinklers, then observe the affected zone. NC State lists several causes of poor sprinkler performance, including nozzles that are clogged or worn, heads that do not rise above the grass, incorrect arcs, and mismatched components.
Mark the location on a simple sketch or photo. Record which heads appear involved rather than assuming the nearest one is responsible. Water may reach a spot from several directions, so the whole zone deserves a look.
Pay attention to misting
A cloud of fine mist is a useful clue. EPA WaterSense explains that excessive operating pressure can cause misting, excessive flow, and uneven coverage. More pressure does not automatically mean better irrigation.
An irrigation professional can compare operating conditions with the equipment’s requirements. Pressure-regulating spray bodies are one possible tool where pressure is too high, but the right response depends on the diagnosis. Avoid choosing replacement parts based only on how far you want a sprinkler to throw water.
Check what has been changed
If the issue appeared after a repair, identify the replacement head or nozzle. Clemson Extension notes that conventional spray heads and rotating sprinklers apply water at different rates and should not share a zone. A mismatched replacement can make a previously workable schedule uneven.
Bring that repair history, the zone number, and your photos to a service request. If coverage checks out but the patch persists, ask your lawn-care provider or local Extension office to help investigate before adding more water. The appearance of the grass alone is not enough to set a new irrigation schedule.
If coverage checks out but the lawn remains brown, our sister brand Vitalawns’ brown-lawn guide covers other clues to gather before choosing a treatment.
