Irrigation Tips

Reviewing Your Irrigation Water Use

January is a useful time to look back at the previous watering season before deciding what your irrigation system needs. For homeowners and property managers in Greenville, Winterville and Eastern North Carolina, water-use records can help organize questions that are easy to forget once spring work begins.

This review can be done without running the system. It should produce a clearer service conversation, not a diagnosis based on one bill.

Know what the meter measures

Gather the available bills or usage reports for the previous year. Confirm whether the meter serves irrigation alone or also supplies the home, business or other facilities.

If irrigation uses a private well, a municipal water bill may tell you nothing about that system’s consumption. Controller records and service notes may still be useful, but do not treat scheduled minutes as measured gallons.

Compare water volume before comparing cost

Check the billing dates, number of days and units shown. EPA WaterSense explains that utilities use different measurement units and rate structures; a larger dollar total does not necessarily mean the same increase in water volume.

Compare similar periods and use the utility’s usage history when available. Ask the water provider about unfamiliar charges or an unclear reading instead of assigning the entire increase to irrigation.

Add the property’s context

Alongside the numbers, note new planting, lawn establishment, changes in occupancy or business activity, known leaks and repairs. Include documented controller changes and the periods when irrigation was in use.

Rainfall and landscape needs also matter. NC State Extension explains that irrigation generally supplements rainfall and that soil, rooting depth and weather affect scheduling. A high-use month needs that context before you decide whether the schedule was excessive.

If records are incomplete, mark the gaps. Avoid reconstructing last season’s settings from memory as though they were confirmed.

Turn observations into service questions

Choose a few specific questions: Did water use change after a repair? Was a temporary establishment schedule ever reviewed? Which zones had recurring wet or dry areas?

An unexplained increase deserves investigation, but the bill alone cannot locate a leak or identify a failed component. Bring the dates and observations to the appropriate provider. Ask the utility about billing questions and your irrigation provider about system concerns.

For commercial properties and HOAs, keep the account information and service history available to the person responsible for irrigation decisions.

Connect the property’s care plans

AquaSano is part of the BT Carawan family of companies. Coordinate irrigation questions with BT Carawan’s commercial grounds management and Vitalawns’ residential lawn care or commercial lawn care where those services apply.
