Before a busy May schedule takes your attention away from the yard, check how your irrigation responds to rain. For a Greenville homeowner, the useful question is simple: will the system skip unnecessary watering when conditions change? The answer depends on the equipment, its setup, and whether it is working.
Know what your device does
A rain sensor interrupts scheduled irrigation after a set amount of rainfall. It generally allows watering again after the sensor dries or a delay ends. It does not directly measure how much moisture remains around your plants’ roots.
UF/IFAS Extension recommends checking rain sensors at least annually. Start with the controller’s sensor setting and the manufacturer’s instructions. A sensor left in bypass cannot provide the intended shutoff. Ask for help if testing requires reaching equipment that is difficult to access safely.
Check location and controller setup
A rain sensor needs exposure to rainfall. An overhang or growing tree canopy can shelter it; sprinkler spray or roof runoff can give it misleading input. Note visible obstructions rather than moving or rewiring the device without understanding its installation.
Weather-based controllers use local weather information and landscape conditions to adjust watering. EPA WaterSense explains that these can replace a timer or work as an add-on. Confirm what your controller actually uses before assuming that an app connection means it automatically manages rainfall.
Keep one simple reality check
A rain gauge on the property helps you compare actual rainfall with the watering schedule. Clemson Extension recommends an open location and checking and emptying the gauge after rain. Nearby rainfall reports may not match your yard.
Keep a note of skipped watering, recent rain, and any areas that remain wet or dry. Review that information when making adjustments. A working sensor is useful, but regular observation still matters.
